Great
Lakes Area

I tried something a bit different this time in the Emperor of GL tournament at ATC 08. Rather than have set rounds, I experimented with the "rolling thunder" style of tournament which has worked so well in our HOTT events. My big reason for trying it was there always seems to be a couple very crucial games that hold up the progress of the round. I hate having two dozen players waiting, so thought I'd try matching them up every 15 minutes or so once at least half a dozen or so had completed their games.
It worked fairly well, except I need to have each player carry a scoresheet so that I can keep track of how many games they've played. That has an important bearing on who has the initiative and is given the choice of invading. Other than my unprepareness, I think the system worked well. I will try it again next year with more tools to help me along.
We had a record 30 players vie for the crown of Emperor of Great Lakes, this time. The theme was Mediterranean Classical, so there was the usual assortment of Greek and Roman armies, along with their various enemies. This year's emperor is Paul Potter, who racked up eight vassals -- double the number of the next closest kingdom. He used a Late Imperial Roman Eastern army, starting out strong, then putting on an incredible surge in the last hour or so, amassing more and more vassals. Daniel Moehn made a strong showing, and if the tournament had ended an hour earlier, would likely have won with his Marian Romans.
Thanks to all who participated, and I sincerely apologize for how long it has taken me to get these results posted.

Lots and lots of heavy foot armies crunching together in this Classical Mediterranean theme!
