Hordes of the ThingsThe Great Lakes Area DBA Gamers also play Hordes of the Things rules. These are basically a fantasy version of DBA, with additional troops like Beasts, Behemoths, Flyers, Dragons, as well as powerful individuals like Magicians, Heroes and Paladins. One essential difference between the two rules sets is that there is a point system in HOTT, allowing you to custom assemble your army. Fans of HOTT particularly like this feature, as you can use to create any army from myth, novels or that your imagination can dream up. And just like with "Big Battle DBA," you can play larger battles with HOTT, as well. Simply decided upon your army point size and select your army.
Often, you end up needing only a stand or two of fantasy troops to "flesh out" your DBA army into a HOTT one. For example, if you have a Greek hoplite army, maybe toss in some Centaurs as "Riders," a Cyclops as a Behemoth, and Harpies as Flyers. Or you can go really wild and create the army completely from your imagination. One of our GLADBAG members, Dave Zecchini, created the Winged Kingdom of Aves army. It has Penguins as Beasts, armored men riding Ostriches as Knights, huge Owlbears as Behemoths, and so on. Gorgeous, and colorful!
HOTT also has the bonus of being acknowledged as the better written set of rules, with plentiful diagrams, a glossary of terms and their definitions, and so on.
