"The Faithful" gather at New Song for DBA/DBM
The Great Lakes Ancients-playing faithful gathered at New Song Community
Church this April 14 for DBA and DBM Tournaments. Some came from as far
away as Indiana, swelling the numbers to 15 DBA players and 4 (enough for
a Round Robin) in DBM.
The format for DBA was the "scramble," or Frankie's Fire
Drill method, with players matched up with another pair as soon as they're
finished with their game. Thus, there are no set rounds, and the number
of games you get in is dependent on the speed of your matches. GM Rich Hartley
balances the DBA event by taking each player's best three scores, ignoring
any beyond that, except as a tie breaker. Jenny Torbett was the winner of
the DBA event, claiming a painted Later Carthaginian DBA army as first prize
(many thanks to Rich and fellow GM Lowell Lufkin for their generosity with
the numerous prizes). Also many thanks to Ron Holtz, whose church provided
the spacious gaming area, and provided hot dogs, soft drinks and chips to
the participants. It was many players' first time attending a New Song event,
everyone was extremely pleased with the facility and the graciousness of
the hosts.
Results of New Song Tournament
by Rich Hartley
Here are the Results of the New Song DBA scramble tournament held April
20, 2007. The scramble is kind of like a "Chinese Fire Drill"
meets DBA. This format allows players to keep playing no matter what they
have done in the early rounds. You can lose a few games and still come
back to win the tournament. Also, it allows late comers to play and not
lose any ground account of being late. I like to think that most players
enjoy this format.
Thanks to Ron Holtz and Lowell Lufkin for putting on a good time for
us all. Prizes were provided by the Ohio Valley Hoplites, the local NASAMW
chapter.
