Who (and Where) we are...

The Great Lakes Area DBA Gamers (G.L.A.D.B.A.G.) is an active association of players of the Ancient miniatures rules, De Bellis Antiquitatis, or DBA. The group takes its name from the area of the country where most of the members live -- Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia and Western Pennyslvania/New York. Most are also members of the Great Lakes chapter of the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society (HMGS). Acronyms aside, GLADBAGers are a sporting group of gamers who like to have fun, hold tournaments, run campaigns, and so on. Courtesy and friendliness is a hallmark of members of this group -- this is no antagonistic, "win at all costs" group. Our unofficial motto is:

"Imbibo Primorus, Lucror Laxus"

That is Latin for "drink first, win later" -- in other words, our goal is to have fun, not necessarily to win.

2009 HMGS Great Lakes Big Battle DBA Tournament

We had 18 players in 3 -6 player brackets. In an effort to reduce "civil wars," we co-mingled the first two brackets, which were all Book I/II armies. The third bracket was every one else.

Origins 2009 DBA & HOTT Tournaments

Whether it was the economy, or the fact that our normal DBA players were in the mood to play other games, our attendance at the GLADBAG tournies was drown, dramatically. The only tournaments that held their own (or grew) were the 15mm DBA Open on Friday night, and Saturday's 15mm HOTT tourney and Battles from History. The others all lost ground, in some cases having less than half the players as we had in 2008.

Post-Tax Day Big Battle DBA Tournament

We had a "perfect 16" players, which divided nicely into a "B.C. Bracket" of eight players, and an "A.D. Bracket" of eight. Eric Vang wrested a victory on points over four other 2-1 players in the Early Bracket (GM John Loy scoring ties as losses). Tim Ryan was an undefeated 3-0 in the Later Bracket. Congrats to both players!!!

PentaCon 2008 DBA Tournaments

GLADBAG's tireless northern promoter, John Lawitzke, added a new convention to his resume by running two tournaments at PentaCon 2008 in Fort Wayne, IN. Turnout was good for his first-time running of DBA there. He had 8 players in the first event, won by Greg Crane, and 4 in the second, which was won by Steve Smith. Read the reports, though, to discover the way this past Emperor of Great Lakes was humbled at PentaCon...!

HOTT Wax
by Dave Zecchini

With much ado and little-to-no fanfare, I am pleased to announce that both a date and a venue have been chosen for HOTT Wax 2010 - The Year Our Armies Make Contact! The event will be held on Saturday, February 6th at 10:00 (weather permitting), and could run as late as 7 PM at the sufferance of the gods. For the second year in a row, HOTT Wax is being held at the MOSSL office in Worthington, OH - where the Columbus Area Boardgaming Society regularly meets. Lunch/Dinner may be brought in, but snacks are expected to be purchased on-site (soda, chips, candy, etc at $0.50 from the MOSSL Elves.) For those unfamiliar with how to get to the facility, there are excellent directions on the CABS website

Four rounds of murderous mayhem using 15mm 36-point Hordes of the Things armies! Bust out those Gods and Dragons! Overwhelm your opponents! Experience HOTT bigger, longer, and uncut! Compete for Fame, Glory, and Prizes, Prizes, Prizes! The tournament will run from 10:00 AM till 7:00 PM, with hour-and-a-half long rounds. Players should bring terrain and a 36-point 15mm army, but loaner armies and extra terrain will also be available. Beginners welcomed! HOTT 2 Rules with proposed 2.1 modifications (Shooter move 2", Warband move 3", Sneaker breakaway and "friction kills") will be used. Special rules for 36-point battles will be explained before we begin.
