Tournaments
One of the things GLADBAG does to support the Ancient miniatures hobby
and spread the word about our fast-play, simple Ancients rules set, is to
hold tournaments. We hold them at all of the HMGS Great Lakes conventions,
with quite a variety being run at GL's flagship convention, Advance the
Colors in Springfield, OH, as well as at Origins in Columbus. And speaking
of variety, our members put on a kaleidoscope of different formats for the
tournies, too -- standard ones with regular size armies, to double size
ones, through triple size (36 stands) "Big Battle" tournaments.
We run matched pairs, historical battles, whirlygigs, campaign tournaments
and more.
One thing that runs common throughout the tournaments is the level of
good sportsmanship. Visitors from other areas of the country often praise
our events for their friendliness, and remark how welcome our players make
them feel. We are always ready to teach a beginner the game, so seek us
out and join one of our tournies -- we'll likely be glad to loan you an
army, match up with someone who's a good teacher, and let you see what DBA
is all about.
Normal Yearly GLADBAG Tournament Schedule:
- FEBRUARY - "Beginners Tournament" held in Cambridge,
OH, at GL's new one day Battle at the Cross Roads convention.
- MARCH - "Warband DBA Tournament" held in Cincinnati,
at the GL con, Warband. We also hold a 15mm Hordes of the Things tournament
the afternoon of this one day convention.
- MAY - "Drums Along the Maumee DBA Tournament" held
in Toledo, OH, a two-day GL con.
- JUNE - "Warparty DBA Tournament" also in Cincinnati,
at the one day con, Warparty. As with Warband above, we do DBA in the morning
and a Hordes of the Things tournament in the afternoon.
- JUNE/JULY - Origins, the multi-genre convention hosted
by the Game Manufacturers Association in Columbus, OH, is one of our biggest
gatherings of the year. We hold a number of tournaments, including a 15mm
Double Size DBA Tournament (Big Battle DBA with 24 stands instead of
36) on Thursday; 15mm DBA Open on Friday (a whopping 30 players
showed for 2006's open); Battles from History DBA Tournament on
Saturday, where the GMs set up 8 historical refights and you rotate among
the tables playing in four of them. We close the convention festivities
with our annual 15mm Hordes of the Things Tournament on Saturday,
which grows larger and larger every year (20 players in 2006).
- AUGUST - The Annual HMGS Great Lakes BBDBA Tournament
is held at rotating venues throughout the region. This is a 3-round, Big
Battle DBA Tournament taking most of the day.
- SEPTEMBER - Advance the Colors is Great Lakes' flagship
convention, and another of our biggest gatherings. We hold a 15mm Double
Size DBA Tournament (same as at Origins) on Friday, the Annual 15mm
ATC DBA Open on Saturday morning, usually following it up in the afternoon
with a specialty tournament like Darren Buxbaum's Wimpy Wars (featuring
armies with loads of light troops), and then on Sunday conclude the show
with the Emperor of Great Lakes Campaign Tournament - a truly unique
format tournament.
- OCTOBER - In 2006, it looks like we'll be adding another tournament
to our Autumn schedule, at the brand new Char-con convention starting
up in Charleston, WV.
This is just a sample schedule, and we do add other tournaments or special
game days throughout the year, at the initiative of or members.
